Very First Steps of an International Journey

Written by:

The other day I joined an online session on Leading Across Cultures hosted by Rudra Chakraborty. It was an insightful discussion that made me reflect on my own experience.

After more than 10 years of working in international roles and multicultural teams, I realized I’ve been following a simple approach from the very beginning. I have never given it a name before, but if I had to describe it today, I would call it the 4A Framework (2×2).

For me, it has two steps.

Step 1 – Mindset

Aware – Be aware that different cultures exist and that people may think, communicate, and work differently from what you have learned or experienced.

Accept – When you encounter those differences, accept that they are part of a different culture rather than immediately judging them.

Step 2 – Action

Adapt – Learn how to work with those differences.
Adjust – Where appropriate, adjust your own approach and become part of the environment without losing your own values.

This is not an academic model or a universal solution. It is simply an approach that has helped me work with global teams over the years.

I’m curious to know—what mindset or approach has helped you when working across cultures?
